Ineos Grenadier: pure off-roading

In the last decade, the off-road world has undergone a clear transformation. Vehicles have lost their original identity as machines designed to tackle mud, steep slopes, and rough terrain, becoming comfortable, highly equipped, and often even luxurious sedans intended for urban environments.

A trend that, however, has not been followed by the “Grenadier” models produced by the Ineos Group.

Until 2016, anyone in need of a truly capable off-road vehicle suitable for even the most demanding routes could choose from British, German, American, or Japanese offerings, ranging from pickup trucks to station wagons. Common features across all models included layouts specifically designed for off-road use, extreme robustness, and ease of maintenance thanks to mechanical components engineered more for reliability than performance. Reliability, in fact, was also achieved by simplifying accessories and features as much as possible, particularly electronic ones.

The result was—and still is—unstoppable vehicles that offer little in terms of comfort when used outside off-road contexts, such as on roads or in urban areas, and are also characterized by high fuel consumption due to large-displacement engines. Over time, these factors have contributed to a steady contraction of the segment, also driven by the growth of the SUV market. While SUVs cannot match the off-road capabilities of “hardcore” off-roaders, they are far more versatile, comfortable, and economical for everyday use.

The rise of SUVs led in 2016 to the discontinuation of one of the most iconic professional off-road vehicles, the Land Rover “Defender”, followed by more leisure-oriented reinterpretations of another icon, the Jeep “Wrangler”. Aside from pickups, the segment today consists of a limited number of models, including the Ineos “Grenadier”, a recently developed vehicle born more from the passion for engines of Ineos Group chairman Jim Ratcliffe than from pure business considerations.

A global manufacturer operating in the chemical industry—where it ranks as the world’s third-largest company—as well as in manufacturing and professional sports, the Ineos Group employs over 22,000 people across 183 sites in 26 countries. It is also well known in sports as the owner of OGC Nice, a 25 percent stake in Manchester United, and the “Ineos Grenadiers” and “Ineos Team UK” teams competing respectively in professional cycling and the America’s Cup. An official Mercedes Formula 1 sponsor, the Group decided in 2016 to enter the automotive sector by developing a vehicle—the “Grenadier”—intended to replace the outgoing Land Rover “Defender”.

The new model draws inspiration not only in its design, with simple, squared, almost retro lines, but also in its construction philosophy, based on a boxed-section steel ladder frame designed to withstand heavy loads and provide high torsional rigidity and stability compared to open “C” or “T” sections.

Available in four versions—three utility wagons and one pickup—the vehicle features permanent four-wheel drive combined with five-link multilink suspension, reinforced ZF dampers, and separate spring and shock absorber units to simplify maintenance and repairs. A Panhard rod limits lateral axle movement, keeping the rigid Carraro axles perfectly aligned with the frame even under high lateral loads.

A longitudinal mechanical locking differential works in synergy with the front and rear differentials, which are electronically controlled but mechanically engaged. With ground clearance exceeding 26 centimeters, approach angles of 35 degrees, and a wading depth of 800 millimeters, the “Grenadier” models also feature galvanized steel bodywork and Brembo disc brakes—316 millimeters at the front and 305 at the rear. The braking system is designed for a gross weight of seven tonnes, considering that the pickup version can tow trailers up to 3.5 tonnes while accommodating a Euro pallet in the cargo bed.

Such construction comes with weight—ranging from over 2.7 to around 3 tonnes—and for this reason Ineos has not compromised on power. Under the hood is a BMW inline six-cylinder engine, available in both petrol and diesel versions: a turbocharged 3.0-liter unit delivering up to 286 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque at 1,250 rpm in the petrol version. Both engines are paired with a ZF “8HP” eight-speed automatic transmission, optimized to deliver gear shifts in just two-tenths of a second.

The cabins are mounted on the frame via eight supports and feature practical, robust, and user-friendly design solutions. Controls are clear, easy to read, and designed to be operated even while wearing work gloves. Materials prioritize durability and resistance to dirt over visual appeal, and comfort is secondary to practicality—just like the multimedia system, which includes the “Pathfinder” navigation system, specifically designed for off-road use, allowing users to follow unmarked routes by entering latitude, longitude, and altitude.

A reliable ally

Among the Ineos “Grenadier” models, the “Quartermaster” pickup is undoubtedly the one best suited to agricultural use. With five seats, it is built on a design philosophy strongly focused on off-road capability and structural robustness, enabling it to handle even the most demanding working conditions.

In a context where many modern off-road vehicles prioritize comfort, connectivity, and image, the “Quartermaster” deliberately takes a different path. Rather than being a conventional commercial vehicle, it presents itself as a multipurpose machine with a strong operational and professional focus, capable of serving as a valuable ally for many business activities—especially where traction, durability, and towing capacity are essential.

In agriculture, it is particularly suited to farms located in hilly or mountainous areas, where access to fields often involves steep or uneven dirt roads and trailer towing is part of daily operations. Without replacing a tractor, it can complement it in transport and logistics tasks, offering a level of mobility that many conventional road vehicles cannot guarantee.
