It is therefore not merely an aesthetic finishing operation, but an important surface-finishing production stage which, in the specific case of wheel rims, must also guarantee high resistance to wear and abrasion caused by friction with the ground as well as impacts against stones and rocks. At the same time, the painting process must also ensure high aesthetic quality, comply with current environmental protection regulations, and consume as little energy as possible.
These are requirements that often conflict with one another, and the industry has responded by developing increasingly advanced and technologically sophisticated systems such as the one recently commissioned at Titan Italia in Finale Emilia. The result of a major investment, the plant was designed to provide one of the most cutting-edge systems among all European wheel manufacturers.
The facility consists of eleven pre-treatment and chemical cleaning stations, featuring an advanced zinc oxide process designed to remove oxidation, oil residues, and material impurities in order to prepare the surfaces as effectively as possible for the subsequent painting phases.
These treatments are followed by a grey cathodic electrocoating primer application stage, specifically engineered to ensure complete and uniform coverage of the rims, reaching every corner and cavity in order to prevent the formation of lumps or air bubbles.
The same level of attention is devoted to the final painting process, which is carried out in two stages: an initial pre-painting phase performed by robots to apply powder coating in every area that would otherwise be difficult to reach, followed by the final painting stage using reciprocating spray guns.

The plant was designed to use paints that polymerize at low temperatures, an option that significantly reduces environmental impact, despite the fact that the curing ovens are particularly long in order to ensure maximum paint adhesion even in areas where coating thickness may be greater. This potential issue is addressed from the very beginning by positioning the rims vertically on special carriers.
The system is also designed so that whenever direct operator intervention is required, the rims are moved at human working height. Throughout the entire line, the products remain mounted on the aforementioned carriers, resting on minimal contact points located in areas that will not remain visible once the tires are fitted.
The wheels are then unloaded from the carriers using dedicated lifting devices and placed directly onto shipping pallets for delivery to customers, without any further handling or contact with the floor, thereby preventing any possible damage. At that point, the rims are ready to equip the machines for which they are intended, but only after successfully passing one final and meticulous visual quality inspection.
