Agco Power 44Md: a tractor-sized engine

The Agco Power 44MD ranks fifth among the most widely used engines on low- and mid-power traditional tractors

It powers Massey Ferguson and Valtra tractors, capturing a 6.5% share. Together with the three-cylinder 33MD, 49 LFTN-D5, and Core75 engines, Agco Power reaches a total market share of 13.5%, only one percentage point below JD Power Systems.

Before the launch of the latest “Core” series, the 44MD represented the most advanced evolution of Finnish engine engineering, ensuring robustness, reliability, and strong performance in medium- and heavy-duty agricultural and industrial applications.

This four-cylinder inline engine displaces 4.395 liters, making it the second-largest in its class, just behind JD Power Systems’ “PowerTech” four-cylinder. With a 108 mm bore and 120 mm stroke, it yields a unit displacement of nearly 1.1 liters and a stroke/bore ratio of 1.11:1.

On high-end applications such as the Valtra G135, the engine produces 107 kW (145 hp) at 2,000 rpm, with 136 hp nominal power at 2,200 rpm, and a maximum torque of 560 Nm at 1,500 rpm.

Its Bosch common-rail system, operating at 1,600 bar, optimizes combustion for a rapid response and strong torque delivery from as low as 1,000 rpm. Forced induction comes from a turbocharger with wastegate valve and intercooler.

Stage V compliance is achieved via a compact integrated DOC–DPF–SCR module with mainly passive regeneration and no EGR, simplifying the system and reducing maintenance needs.

Structurally, the engine has a vertically oriented layout, minimizing longitudinal and lateral footprint while maintaining strength and service accessibility.
